Department stores are stores that offer a large selection of a particular product or product group and have a minimum sales area of 1000m². The terms department store and department store are often used interchangeably, although strictly speaking this is not entirely correct. Department stores generally offer a wider range of goods than department stores. However, the differentiation between the terms is difficult for the normal customer to distinguish.

Department stores were created due to better purchasing conditions by buying larger quantities from producers. Department stores wanted to set themselves apart from small retailers and gain customers through the price advantage. However, the big boom in department stores has declined sharply in recent years, as more and more shopping centers or shopping malls have moved into city centers and are often more modern and more extensive than traditional department stores.
